Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are fatty acids that we must consume because the body cannot synthesize them. They are required for biological processes. The two types of EFAs the body needs are alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3) and linoleic acid (omega-6). EPA and DHA are omega-3 fatty acids.
